Since it was invented and issued to the U.S. Army way back in 1911, the M1911 pistol has become a truly American icon. This over-a-century-old design has seen some refinements, evolving into the more-polished M1911A1, and even a shorter variant, the Combat Commander. Over the decades, many other companies apart from Colt have produced their own versions of this much-loved pistol, and Wilson Combat is one company that makes excellent 1911s of their own. And the latest is a real beauty: the Supergrade Commander Special. While the “Supergrade” class of pistols has been offered by Wilson Combat for quite some time, this model is the first commander-sized handgun to become available for their Supergrade line.

This model marks Wilson Combat’s first 1911 in commander format for its Supergrade family of customized pistols. Pictured above is the blued model (

Collectors and 1911 enthusiasts can choose between monotone and two-toned versions. One version is blued with contrasting polished sides, and the other has a stainless steel lower. The pistol is available in three calibers: .45 ACP, 9mm and .38 Super. As with every 1911 in the commander format, this pistol’s barrel length is at 4.25 inches with the matching shorter slide. The match-grade barrel is of stainless steel, featuring a flush-cut reverse crowned muzzle and fluting on the chamber section. The slide has a flat top, and only features angled rear serrations; there are no underbarrel rails or a flared magwell as you may expect on a “modernized” 1911, to keep with a more classic styling. However, it does feature a large Beavertail to prevent nasty slide-bite.

The Wilson Combat Supergrade Commander Special in two-tone finish is also a real stunner. Note its classic styling sans a flared magwell, pic rails or front cocking serrations (

Other unique premium features on this pistol are a white gold bead front sight, Wilson Combat Battlesight iron sights, smooth grips with a deluxe wood burl and inlaid sterling silver medallions on the grips. You may think that this pistol is all about looks, but it comes with an “Accuracy Guarantee” that states it’s capable of 1.5-inch groups at 25 yards.
